Brexit & International Freight

The EU and UK sailing apart

Whether or not our link is entirely chiselled out, we must plan for all outcomes.

Brexit is an inescapable topic at formal, or informal business meetings, the greatest change for a generation. As with any challenge, planning based on good insight and advice will bring solutions, although we understand concerns.

Following our Brexit declaration in 2016, the British International Freight Association (BIFA) stated “there are more unknowns than knowns for UK trade and ports”. They hoped this would be a short term situation but time has changed little.

Over three years later, the only certainty remains uncertainty. A deal, then a Boris Johnson variation have appeared but even if passed, will not be final. An extended transition period is likely, completed trade deals with the EU and non EU nations are a long term hope.

Brexit not happening, or closer alignment remain possibilities, although business must work on the assumption we will be outsiders and act accordingly on the movement of goods.

Freight Management

Grasping the scale of freight movement within the UK is essential to understanding large effects from small changes. With 78% of UK freight to the EU being roll on roll off, primarily trucks, the Port of Dover offers a prominent example.

Up to 10,000 trucks each day take an average of two minutes to process. If new requirements add just another two minutes, this will result in a 17 mile queue. A return to Operation Stack, or the planned equivalent, Operation Brock.

Beyond abject delay, businesses in all sectors perceive risks to the supply chain, additional costs, new tariffs and customs procedures. You could add to this currency, or recruitment issues, or data protection changes.

Potential challenges are widespread, they are covered further in the subtle effects of Brexit. The obvious issue of practical freight management may still prove the most telling and require dedicated input.

Dynamic International & Brexit

Planning our internal needs is part of Brexit, to ensure we remain efficient. Dynamic’s primary focus will still be on our clients requirements, helping to ensure their business processes see as seamless a transition as possible.

Being parked in a 17 mile queue is not business positive, we will assist in planning alternative routes and strategies. Cargo may need to be analysed on a more granular basis, decisions be quicker, yet more flexible.

By all means see further detail on likely options for post Brexit freight. Uncertainty can also be seen as the art of probability and our team will be mapping a range of choices, to support any freight needs.

Dynamic are a freight company, yet one offering detailed logistics support. You are welcome to discuss how we can help at any time before, or after Brexit.
